Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PSLE Chinese format?

PSLE 华文 (Chinese) has 4 papers: Paper 1 (作文 — composition, 50 min), Paper 2 (语文理解与应用 — language use, comprehension, 1h 30min), Paper 3 (口试 — oral, ~15 min), Paper 4 (听力 — listening, ~30 min). Vocabulary tested: ~2,600 characters for foundation, ~3,000+ for higher.

What is the difference between Chinese and Higher Chinese at PSLE?

PSLE Higher Chinese (高级华文) is a separate subject with its own grade banding. It uses more advanced vocabulary, classical Chinese (文言文) passages, and longer compositions. Students take Higher Chinese only if their school offers it AND they qualify academically — typically top 10-20% of the cohort.

How do I prepare my child for PSLE Chinese?

Best PSLE Chinese prep: (1) Read Chinese storybooks daily for 20-30 min (any genre), (2) Practice 看图作文 (picture composition) — most students lose marks here, (3) Build vocabulary with 每周字词 (weekly word lists), (4) Use prelim papers from 5+ schools to expose your child to varied question styles.

Are PSLE Chinese papers free?
