What is Primary 5 Higher Chinese (高级华文)?

Higher Chinese (高级华文, HCL) is an elective subject taken by Primary 5 and 6 students who excel in Chinese. The PSLE Higher Chinese paper is more challenging than standard Chinese and tests richer vocabulary, classical Chinese, and advanced composition. Taking HCL is a requirement for admission to selected secondary schools (SAP schools and certain IP schools).

Higher Chinese covers the same four exam slots (WA1, WA2, SA1, SA2), but the questions are significantly harder. Topics include classical Chinese (文言文), advanced 成语 / 四字词语, longer and more sophisticated compositions, and comprehension passages with classical Chinese elements. SA2 also includes PSLE-style 高级华文 questions.
